Imagine Going Door-To-Door!
That's exactly what our 23-year old son, BJ, is now doing! He graduated last May, Magna Cum Laude, majoring in Psychology with a double minor in Mathematics and Business. He spent the summer with us, studying for his licensing exams to become a Certified Financial Planner and Stock Broker before moving back to Oregon to coach Football and Basketball with his father.
His dream? To become a highly successful Financial Planner for Edward Jones. He feels a deep pull to help people with their financial well-being and security. He's a numbers guy, but he's also a great leader and socially conscious young man.
When I've told family, like my wealthy Aunt LaVerne or friends of mine, like Yale Hirsch, author and creator of the Stock Trader's Almanac, that our son is starting his Financial Planning business, they say things like: There couldn't be a worst time to get into this line of work. To which I TurnItAround and reply: " ....OR the very, very best time to get in, now that everything is half-off! We're excited to have our son investing for us. He has a mind for it and has always been able to make money from thin air!"
As early as age 3, he was always in my purse, counting money! To this day, he is adamant that I use my change first before dollars. After a series of interviews throughout this past fall, Edward Jones brought him on, and in January they sent him to Tucson, AZ for his first round training: how to go door-to-door to get names and phone numbers of qualified prospects.
I'm not going to lie, it made my stomach hurt to visualize the worst case scenarios that door-to-door might offer. However, at age 5 he was the kid in the neighborhood who went door-to-door selling zip lock baggies of BUGs! People thought he was so irresistible, they gave him any where from 50 cents to $1.00 for a bag of bugs!
Having two decades of MasterMinding under my belt, I know - down to my toes - that you can always visualize worst case scenarios ... OR you can visualize best case scenarios. You get to DECIDE!
Knowing that he would be going through his own process, I determined that as he faced his fears and called me, we would just turn whatever had happened around to "best case" MasterMind Requests.
The first day he called 2-3 times. As the first week wore on, we talked at least 2 x's a day. We'd discuss what was happening. And yes, the rejection factor was huge, as long as he made it about himself rather than what people behind those doors may need from what he could offer, reaching out in this way at this very pivotal moment in time.
One day early in this process his dad (a former state championship football coach) said, "Son, if anybody in the world can do this, you can!" His father uses far fewer words than I do, but hey, it's all good ...that got him through Day 3, 4, 5, & 6!
I would just listen for his underlining beliefs, gently call his attention to them, together we'd turn them around and formulate a new MasterMind request... and off he'd go to ring more door bells!
Edward Jones' goals for him was to get 25 qualified prospects (phone numbers and names of people) per day and 500 within 6 weeks OR he'd be dropped from the company. The first week was streaming by quickly and he was getting zero to 5-7 a day.
He'd call and say, "I only got 5" and I'd say "5 that's GREAT! That's more than yesterday!" He felt the pressure of "not" getting 25 a day, and each day we had to work through that old, disabling, worn-out, sales belief system.
I reminded him that he was just getting into his stride. It was no different than learning how to make 3-point shots in basketball. Once you find your own groove, you can go to it again and again. That once he found "it" he would easily catch up and move forward quickly to attracting the 500 that was required ...if not a whole lot more!
Think for a moment how BIG 500 individual phone number in 6 weeks seems!
However, BJ is QUICK to SHIFT and BELIEVE, like most of today's young people, because they haven't spent as much time - as maybe you and I have - in suffering and negating!
Within a few days, he quickly went from 7 to 15 qualified leads per day and yet, he just couldn't see how he was ever going to get 25 a day, let alone how he was going to get 500, when he was already quickly getting behind. Again, I would gently remind him, one step at a time in finding your "groove" ...your own personal "it" factor.
I also told him that once he got these first 500, he only had to do this once. Anybody who can do this, can go anywhere in the world that they want and can accomplish anything they want in life.
This past Thursday, during our morning MasterMind session, I discovered that he was only going to neighborhoods that weren't very affluent. When I asked him why he didn't go to more prosperous neighborhoods, he said it was because they were ruder because they already had enough money to have their own Financial Advisors. They were either "old people" (probably my age group /50 something!) or "young stay at home mothers" ... so you can see how easy our societal stereotype thinking can deter us from the very thing that will bring us the success we seek.
MONEY & RICH PEOPLE BELIEFS!
Once again, beliefs get in the way of what's entirely possible - or trying to unfold for us. I quickly stated that people with plenty of money generally ARE happier and MORE accommodating and generous. (Remember, it's whatever you say it is!) That they've been where he is, and can actually be more engaging and relaxed about the conversation. That people with plenty of money can invest anywhere and everywhere they wanted, and with whomever they wanted. That as he developed a relationship with them, they very possibly would be motivated to give him a try. (Now - for heaven's sake - don't write me about how people with financial lack are just as happy, kind and generous as wealthy folks! I'm just saying he - LIKE SO MANY PEOPLE - had an unnecessary Negative belief about financially wealthy people being mean and rude. And, think about it for a moment, are people who are STRESSED out about paying their next months bills generally happy and accommodating to door-to-door salesmen? Maybe, maybe not? It's still whatever you decide it is! Further more, in his Financial Planning business he IS MOST CERTAINLY looking for people who have money to invest and put into money growing plans! )
He liked that TurnAround I did for him very, very much. So, I said, "Why don't you let your car decide what neighborhood it wants to go into today!" ... thus making it a "fun" concept and something he could relax into and allow his inner guidance to guide him. We then MasterMinded for the right and perfect neighborhood for his car to drive into!
Three hours later he called saying that he had just gotten 20 qualified leads! YEAH!
The next day, he decided to go to an even wealthier neighborhood. He called saying that it was "gated" with a sign that said, "No soliciting." I said, "OK, remember Your CRITERIA: you ONLY WANT people who need, want and are ready for exactly what you have to offer." This is a "Not Now," that's all. You will meet wealthy people on the golf course, the basketball court and at business functions. They will "light" to you and the rest will unfold easily for what you have to offer.
Now, let's MasterMind for "the best" ways for you to now accomplish 500 qualified leads within the next four weeks.
I reminded him that there are "ways" we know not of! That all we have to do is ask. So I said, "How do you really prefer that Your Financial Planning business unfold for you?"
He answered rather quickly that he'd, 1) like everyone to be pre-qualified by having already seen the newest Edward's Jones TV commercial, 2) that people would call him when they wanted to create their financial plan with him and buy stocks, and 3) that they would call between the hours of 9-4 to leave him open for coaching boys sports in the evenings.
Now you may be saying to yourself, "This is too easy! Having people call you who are already pre-qualified on their own AND who want to do business with you within the business hours of 9-4?" Ridiculous!
Well, we MasterMinded for that last Friday.
Monday morning, he called to let me know he'd been invited to a LeTIP meeting, and he was once again concerned about getting his 25 qualified prospects for his daily minimum, given that he would not be able to get out there and do his door-to-door until after the lunch meeting. (LeTIP is a professional organization of business men and women who are dedicated to growing their own businesses and the businesses of each member, through the exchange of referrals: "tips." )
We MasterMinded again, asking for 25 quality leads that are prosperous, competent-minded people who need, want and are ready for exactly what he has to offer, TODAY!
When you ask, BE READY to receive, in ways that are perfect for you. BJ is a wonderful leader because he loves all people and loves socializing. I knew all along, once he got into a business setting like Chamber of Commerce (which I suggested since day one, but, being my son, he needed to hear it from someone else before doing it - if you know what I mean!) he would really connect with people in a way that would start building long term relationships.
At the end of the LeTIP meeting, he was approached by the area President and asked if he would start a new Chapter in South Salem, and be it's new President! Out of all the people who attended that meeting, he asked BJ to be the President of a new Chapter! Coincidence? Serendipity? Synchronicity? Ask... and be ready to RECEIVE?
BJ got his "it." He had been unable to make an effective approach into small businesses to talk to the owner about financial planning. But now he could easily go from business to business inviting people to join his LeTIP Chapter.
He left the meeting and his car drove him to the area's businesses where he went door-to-door easily and joyously! Within a few short hours, he called saying he had just accomplished 25 qualified business leads /prospects for LeTIP ...and for the Financial Planning services that he offered.
His first day, he had tried to go to businesses, and it was brutal! Now, he's excited about going door-to-door into every business, introducing himself and simply extend an invitation to be the first, in their industry category, to join his newly forming LeTIP Chapter ... "Oh, and by the way, I'm in Financial Planning with Edward Jones ...may I have your business card?"
Last night he KNEW for himself, that he was going to accomplish 500 qualified leads in plenty of time.
This is the POWER of MasterMinding.

As a mother, I could have gotten all caught up in the emotionality of "my baby being rejected by so many mean people" and hung out in that horrible, painful place ... that's the first gut response I did in fact have. HOWEVER, I can't stand going through life that way any more... I did that for the first 30+ years of my life.
